How to Conduct the Initial Consultation

When you sit down for an initial consultation or conference call, treat it as an interview. The attorney is evaluating whether they can help you, but you are also evaluating whether they are the right person for this representation.

Come prepared with:

  • A clear account of what happened
  • Any documents you have received (summons, police report, court paperwork)
  • A list of questions

Good questions to ask include:

  • What are the main strengths and challenges of my case?
  • What would your general strategy be?
  • How long do cases like mine typically take to resolve?
  • What outcomes have you achieved in similar situations?
  • Who specifically will be handling my case, and what is their experience?
  • How will you communicate with me, and how quickly do you typically respond?

The answers will tell you both about the attorney’s competence and about how they will treat you as a client.
