How Long Does a Massachusetts Criminal Case Take?

Understanding the timeline is useful context. Simple misdemeanor cases in District Court can sometimes be resolved in a few months, while more complex felony cases in Superior Court can take a year or more from arraignment to resolution. Your case may involve multiple court dates — hearing after hearing at which procedural matters are addressed — before anything that looks like resolution occurs.

This can be frustrating, but it is normal. Many of these court dates involve important behind-the-scenes work on your case even when nothing dramatic seems to happen in the courtroom.

Your Role Throughout This Process

Throughout this process, your attorney should be your guide and your advocate. Every court date should be preceded by a conversation about what is going to happen and what the goals are. Every development in your case should be communicated to you promptly. You should never walk into a courtroom uncertain about what is about to occur.

At Milligan & Higgins, communication with our clients is paramount. We explain everything clearly, in plain language — because we believe that understanding your own case is not just a nicety but a fundamental part of effective defense.
